Paper cups are almost always sold by the ounce, while recipes, menus and drink standards are often written in millilitres. To make things more confusing, two suppliers can list the same "7 oz" cup as 180 ml and 200 ml. This guide explains how ounces and millilitres relate, why the numbers differ between suppliers, and how to choose the right sizes for your business.
How many ml is 1 oz?
Cup sizes use the US fluid ounce, which is about 29.57 ml. Multiply the oz figure by 29.57 and you get the theoretical volume of the cup.
Example: 12 oz × 29.57 ≈ 355 ml.
The UK (imperial) fluid ounce is slightly smaller at 28.41 ml, but packaging catalogues almost always use the US ounce. All figures in this guide are based on the US ounce.
Paper cup size chart (oz to ml)
The table below shows the calculated ml value for every paper cup size in our catalogue, plus the typical use.
| Size | Approx. ml (calculated) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 4 oz | 118 ml | Espresso, Turkish coffee, tasting portions |
| 7 oz | 207 ml | Tea, small filter coffee, vending |
| 8 oz | 237 ml | Small latte, cappuccino, americano |
| 12 oz | 355 ml | Regular latte, flat white, tea |
| 14 oz | 414 ml | Medium-large hot drinks |
| 16 oz | 473 ml | Large latte, iced drinks |
| 22 oz | 651 ml | Extra large, smoothies, iced drinks |
| 32 oz | 946 ml | Sharing-size cold drinks, iced tea |
These are calculated values. The real fill volume can differ by a few ml depending on the cup's shape and rim height.
Why do suppliers list different ml values for the same oz?
There are three common reasons:
- Rounding. Suppliers round 207 ml down to 200 ml or 355 ml down to 350 ml. Some round up, some round down.
- Brim-full capacity versus serving volume. Cup capacity is usually measured filled to the brim. In practice drinks are served a few millimetres below the rim, especially when a lid goes on. A 12 oz cup therefore typically holds less than 355 ml of actual drink.
- Manufacturer nominal values. Plastic cups in particular are labelled with the mould maker's own nominal volume. Our 95 mm Eco PET cups, for example, use 350 ml for 12 oz, 470 ml for 16 oz and 550 ml for 18 oz.
The practical takeaway: when you order, look at the ml and dimension data on the product page, not just the oz label. If your recipe depends on an exact volume, filling a sample cup with water and measuring it is the most reliable test.
Hot cup sizes and pieces per carton
Our single-wall hot paper cups are coated with PE (polyethylene) on the inside. The data below comes straight from our catalogue.
| Size | Board structure | Pieces per carton |
|---|---|---|
| 4 oz | 187+18PE | 3,000 |
| 7 oz | 195+15PE | 3,000 |
| 8 oz | 260+18PE | 1,000 |
| 12 oz (80 mm rim) | 240+18PE | 2,000 |
| 14 oz (90 mm rim) | 300+18PE | 1,000 |
| 16 oz | 300+18PE | 1,000 |
| 22 oz | 300+18PE | 1,000 |
A notation such as "260+18PE" describes the paperboard weight (g/m²) and the amount of PE coating applied to it. Heavier board generally feels sturdier in the hand.
Cold cup sizes
Our cold paper cups are PE-coated on both sides (for example 12PE+260+15PE). The outer coating protects the board from the condensation that forms on the outside of a cup holding an iced drink.
| Size | Board structure | Pieces per carton |
|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 12PE+260+15PE | 1,000 |
| 12 oz (80 mm rim) | 12PE+232+15PE | 2,000 |
| 14 oz (90 mm rim) | 12PE+260+15PE | 1,000 |
| 16 oz | 12PE+260+15PE | 1,000 |
| 22 oz | 12PE+260+15PE | 1,000 |
| 32 oz | 12PE+260+15PE | 600 |

How to choose the right sizes
Stocking every size ties up cash and storage space. For most businesses, three sizes are enough.
Coffee shops and coffee brands
- Small: 8 oz for espresso-based small drinks
- Regular: 12 oz, the size that carries most of the menu
- Large: 16 oz for large lattes and iced drinks
- Add 4 oz if you serve espresso or Turkish coffee to go.
You will find suggested products on our cafés page and, for brands designing their own cups, on the coffee brands page.
Offices, tea service and vending
7 oz is a common size for tea and small filter coffee, and a carton holds 3,000 pieces, which helps where consumption is high and storage is tight.
Bars, events and takeaway
Cold-drink-heavy menus lean on 16 oz and 22 oz. If you want a clear cup that shows off the drink, 95 mm PET cups are worth considering; you can browse them in the cups category.
Don't forget the lid diameter
Once you have picked a cup size, the lid has to fit the rim diameter. Two cups with the same oz value can have different rim sizes. In our catalogue, 12 oz cups are listed with an 80 mm rim and 14 oz cups with a 90 mm rim. Check the diameter on the product page before ordering lids, or list cup and lid together in your quote request and we will check the fit. All lid options are in the lids category.
Pre-order checklist
- Write down the ml volume of every drink on your menu.
- Match each drink to a cup size and try to stay within two to four sizes.
- Decide whether you need lids, and confirm the rim diameter.
- Compare your monthly consumption with the pieces per carton.
- If you are planning custom printing, factor in the printed minimums (paper cups start from 25,000 pieces). Our custom printed paper cups guide explains the process.
Frequently asked questions
How many ml is an 8 oz paper cup?
The calculated value is about 237 ml. Suppliers also list it as 240 or 250 ml. The amount actually served is a little lower because of the space left below the rim.
How many ml is a 12 oz cup?
About 355 ml. Some suppliers list 340 or 350 ml. The 12 oz paper cups in our catalogue have an 80 mm rim.
What size cup is used for espresso?
A 4 oz cup (about 118 ml) is standard for a single or double espresso. Our 4 oz hot cups come 3,000 to a carton.
Can I serve iced drinks in a hot cup?
For quick consumption it works, but condensation forms on the outside of the cup with iced drinks. Cold cups, PE-coated on both sides, are designed for that use.
What is the minimum order for plain cups?
The minimum order for unprinted products is five cartons. The quantity per carton depends on the size and is shown on each product page, for example 1,000 pieces for the 8 oz hot cup and 3,000 for the 4 oz.
Where can I see prices?
An estimated price range is shown on each product page. The exact price depends on quantity, printing and delivery and is confirmed in a quote. Prices exclude VAT.
